Tiger Iron Finished

The tiger iron pendant I wrote about is finished. I managed to do a patina that came close to matching the iridescent black in the stone. I know exactly what I did but I'm still not sure I can do it easily again. There are some subtle factors. I am super happy about it. Tiger Iron is is a gemstone containing layers of vibrant golden tigereye, metallic grey hematite and rich, red jasper. this causes superb chatoyance and reflections.

..

..

..

The chain would normally have been black silver like the pendant but the bronze chain has a copper cast. (It's not as visible in the photo as I would like.) It reflects off the stone beautifully. Size is about 2" wide by 3" high. It's from the collection of Tracy Schmidt.

Other than that, I have finished one pair of the earrings with the glorious pearls. Also finished the ring from the Steven Universe series. Will have a photo of that up pretty soon. I loved working with the concept from the anime.

I'm still finding that carving waxes is the place that keeps me from the fairly constant anger I feel at what's happening in the world. I am doing political work, but it doesn't change the anger and the frustrations.

And I'm very excited about working with a magnificent turquoise that I've been hoarding forever. It's a Lloyd Eshbach with deep red veining. I'm going to use rubies with it. I only have a very few of these, but it's finally time for me to set one. The influence is going to be antique Middle Eastern jewelry with Persian turquoise. I'm really looking forward to doing the carving for it. A pendant of course.

comments

Stunning Turquoise And Cloud Dragons

(crossposted as laurieopal on Live Journal)

I was carving waxes all day. It felt great. Included a large watermelon tourmaline that will be in gold with small colored diamonds.

And I'm thinking about Chinese cloud dragons. Have been looking at scroll paintings of them. Thinking about how to design for dragon wrapped in flaoting clouds.

Turquoise is set in sterling with small cinnamon colored diamonds on left to reflect the brown webbing. From the collection of Tracy Schmidt.

comments
