These two pendants are both copper and silver but very much different in all other ways.

I thought it would be interesting to show them in contrast. Please click on them to get the right image!

Sunstone in sterling. It's about 1.5". The photo does not catch the varied luminescence as well as I'd like.
..

Copper ore in sterling. About 2.5". This one particularly needs to be clicked on.

I'm taking some down time after Boskone and will post again when I'm back at work. Down time much needed!

Here it is and I got a pretty good image of it. My first and possibly my only kangaroo. Click on image to get the right photo quality

it's is sterling with a gorgeous Ethiopian opal. Height is about 2.5 inches. From the collection of Bayla Fine. The kangaroo was her idea and I'm thrilled.

I'm getting ready for Boskone and am super busy.  I will be putting up a couple of new designs I'll be bringing next time I post

Finally this is the dragon I've been writing about. It took forever but I'm really, really happy with the design.

It's in bronze and is about 2" wide. From the collection of Marcia Crump

These are the very last of my antique garnets, except for a few very small ones. They worked beautifully with the bronze. The large garnet in the claw is much redder than the photo.

Click on the photo for the good image.

I have a good photo of the kangaroo that will go up next.

And I have a new design with a lovely lapis that I'm photographing now. I'll be bringing it to Boskone in a couple of weeks.

This is a stone, Ray Mine Silica, that I am always inspired to work with. And the work and the stone are very right together

Click on image for excellent view. It makes all the difference.

I just finished a lovely opal ring that I'm bringing to Boskone and the kangaroo and the nephrite jade are going in the mail tomorrow.

And I'm working on a new pearl pendant that is also going to Boskone.

And this is a Raven brooch that was just finished that's from the collection of Alisa Deer.  I really love making Ravens.

And now I'm going back to work.

...

These are a group of fresh water pearls, I'm designing for lately. The double pearls are particularly lovely to work with. One of the the singles is pairing with the with the obsidian I wrote about last time.

They have a subtlety of color that isn't obvious in the photo - although it is other wise a good image.

I'm working on the kangaroo with the opal and the bronze dragon is finally cast and it will be ready fairly soon.  The ammonite is set and I'll have a photo (I hope) next time.

Everything that needed to go out for Xmas was mailed by the 10th and I'm holding the other work I've finished til after the first. I avoid the seasonal mails as much as possible.

I'm starting to plan the new work for Boskone in mid February.  We've been having an surprisingly cold winter for San Francisco. I know, if you're in the Midwest or the East Coast you can sneer at me. I grew up in the northeast and I remember.

And I have a red/orange opal ring that I need to work on as well.

But I am taking holiday time off with my daughters and looking forward to it.

Have good holidays.

Boston was really fine. I got some fascinating commissions. saw lots of people i really like, and the weather and the travel were excellent.
I felt very luck, I'm very intimidated by east coast winter weather. I've lived in California too long.

The photo of a fossilized snail some millions of years old with cinnamon diamonds is a commission I brought to Boskone.

Fogcon is this weekend. It's a good thing my cat loves his cat sitters otherwise he would be very displeased. I'm looking forward to Fogcon, It's one of my favorites. But I'm also looking forward after it to lots of time to just work on my designs.

laurieopal: opal (Default)
Still packing but everything is close. Going to Boskone tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

George and I bless my cat sitter - he's not alone.
laurieopal: opal (Default)
The jewelry is almost all done. I just have to solder a few posts on earrings. I just set a brilliant rainbow moonstone in a ring.

The Boston weather looks OK so far and I'm really looking forward to being at Boskone.

Photos are of a pearl necklace I just finished. The main pearl is even more beautiful then the photo. I've been saving it for a long time for the right design.

And this is the close up.

laurieopal: opal (Default)
I have been working on some of my patchwork chain pendants. I just finished one with a large twisted pearl I've been saving for the right thing.
I've been making a lot of the smaller designs and (I know I'm wrong) feeling almost caught up.

I just got a package of beautiful stones from one of my lapidaries for Boskone. They are azurite and cut from an azurite ball. It is
azurite with a malachite nodule. There are 4 of them - all different.

Tomorrow a group of small stones to set in dragon cuff, sword pendant etc.

The level of copy editing I have to do says I'm too brain dead to write more tonight.

The white in the one above is a light bounce. I couldn't get it properly lit without the bounce and it's late.

laurieopal: opal (Default)
I just finished setting some new rings, including a rose quartz that is truly rose not pink and a stunning golden sheen obsidian. I'm working on setting several more rings as well. And a wonderfully strangely shaped Oregonite as well.

I've been working a lot of hours getting work done and it will be finished in time. although it always feels pretty intense. There is a very recently cast rainbow moonstone that I'm hoping to have ready and I'm also working on a group of earrings.

And I'm thinking about a ring commission I just got from the Steven Universe cartoon series about a young human-gem hybrid. The gems are aliens with special powers and characteristic derived from specific gems. The ring will be a ruby, garnet and sapphire which have special meanings. I'm excited about doing it.

This is the chatoyant malachite pendant I just finished. I love the way the stone incorporates and reflects light.

laurieopal: opal (Default)
I took a little time off after the first but I have been very much back to work for a few days,

The pendant with the oregonite is cast and looks perfect as does the design with the chatoyant malachite.

I'll be polishing them this week and should have an earlier group set fairly soon as well. This should include the bubble opal.

And I working on some new designs and will be making some rings for Boskone as well.

I love looking through my stones and making choices.

My cat George, who is usually well jewelry trained, has been been a little too fascinated. He has occasionally been extending a delicate paw into my work table. Fortunately he does understand the command "Get down!"

George looking wistful.

I've been doing a lot of carving both commissions and new work for Boskone.

Most recently I've been polishing a small group of designs that were just cast. I always spend a lot of time not just on the visible parts of the designs but on the backs as well. Since that's where the sprues (attachments) go in casting, I have to carefully replicate the textures I carved in the waxes in the parts of the metal that are untextured after the sprues are removed. It's very precise and time consuming but I need the back of the insides to be part of the art.

The backs of the bronzes I'm working on will be bright with some contrast. The fronts of the designs will be patinated and have overtones of copper. Given the technique each one comes out a bit different. There will be photos.

The silver I'm working on is antiqued and then polished moderately bright. I like the detail to show.

I'm also carving two new designs. One is a brilliant chatoyent malachite and the other is a white/clear bubble opal. It's a kind of opal that is new to me. It has bubbles inside that were formed under great heat and tiny occasional flashes of color.
laurieopal: opal (Default)
I'm sorry that I won't be at Boskone this weekend but I really need the time for my work. Will miss folks, but look forward to seeing them next year. Hope it's a great convention!

George, of course is thrilled I'll be home.

laurieopal: opal (Default)
I've got a lot of commissions and several sculptures to make. Unfortunately i need this time for my work, so I won't be at Boskone this year.

I'm going to miss everyone but I will see you next time. Have a great convention!
laurieopal: opal (Default)
Jewelry is packed. Displays etc are well on the way.

My cat knows the signs of my leaving too well and is looking depressed. But he does adore my cat sitter, so he will be fine.

I'm excited about the new stones I have with me. Will probably put up some photos when I get back. Really looking forward to seeing friends that I don't see enough.

Up early tomorrow and then off.
laurieopal: opal (Default)
I just got the first group of new stones to bring to Boskone from one of my two lapidaries. Haven't had a chance to look at them yet.

I'm getting organized for the final work on the jewelry. Hopefully will be done by Friday night so I can start working on the other parts of the prep. Have one final lonely pearl dragon to polish.

The commissions I'm bringing with me are all completely finished.

Pendant below is plume agate and sterling silver. I worked hard to get the setting to subtlety reflect the stone. Actual size is about 2". It's from the collection of Marsha Jones.

Much as I'm looking forward to Boskone. I'm _not_ looking forward to winter.
laurieopal: opal (Default)
I'm finally back and writing again. I had wonderful downtime and then got sick the day before I came home. I'm now mostly fine and working very hard getting ready for Boskone.

Getting sick after a great vacation is not good for the soul. But much more important, it was really good to get some downtime. I won't have much for quite a while.

The laurieopal upside is I have lots of photos to put up of new work.

This one is of an opal bird. The whole design originally was inspired by an opal chip that ended up being the bird's neck. It needed to be somewhat abstract and still be a bird and incorporate the opals in an essential way. It took me quite a while to figure it out. I like what I did a lot and challenges like this always stretch me in ways that make me really happy.

It's about 2.5" long in sterling silver. From the collection of Rebecca Burgess

Next photo will be a wild amber jelly fish.
laurieopal: opal (Default)

I just got some beautiful new stones including these. Both of them are about 2.5 inches but they photographed so beautifully large I decided to post them that way.

Druzy flowers

Malachite druzy

I'm planning to make designs for both of them for Boskone.

I’m taking an artists sabbatical this winter, so unfortunately I won't be at
Boskone this February.

I will  be there as usual in 2018.

I'll very much miss seeing everyone this year but I’ll look forward to seeing you next year!
laurieopal: opal (Default)
Getting closer to being ready.  Still have a little jewelry work left and then there is display etc.

I photographed a few of the pendants I'm bringing this time.

One of the most stunning moss agates I've ever seen.

A Jelly fish pendant with an Ethiopian opal and a pearl.  I love the aesthetic of jelly fish

Looking forward to seeing friends at Boskone.  Fingers crossed on weather.
