Ammonite Pendant
Dec. 30th, 2022 06:00 pmPendant is fossilized ammonite and is about 1.75" high. You need to _click_ on the image to see it properly. They went extinct in the cretaceous, about the same time as the dinosaurs. Sometimes the colors are amazing. These are even more vivid in life.
This is what they looked like in the cretaceous.
I've almost finished carving the kangaroo standing on the Ethiopian opal and also a very vivid nephrite jade with a tropical flower.
It's being a particularly good time to carve.
I have a lot to work on right now.

Charoite Pendant and Ethiopian Opal
Aug. 3rd, 2021 08:51 pmI'm working on a group of rings and on several commissions. The flame and salamander is resting for a bit but I'm really happy with the way the salamander is developing
This is a charoite pendant. It's a lovely purple stone and set in a sterling design. The photo is only OK but I decided it shows it well enough. It's about 2" long and from the collection of Tracy Schmidt.
..
These are two views of an Ethiopian opal I'm working on for a commissioned pendant. The design will be challenging because the colors in the stone are varied and depend on angles and positioning. It will never look like either of these views all the time. It's one of the things that make it exciting. Pendant will be for the collection of Bayla Fine.
..
It's late but I think I'll work a little more.

Steven Universe Ring
Jul. 2nd, 2020 07:25 pmI made this ring from episode 49 of the Steven Universe cartoon. The ring design is mine, but the stone combination with garnet on top and the ruby and sapphire placement is crucial to the on going story. I've always liked Steven Universe at lot; among other things, it's clever and queer friendly.
The garnet is one of the last of my antique Hungarian garnets. The mines have been gone for a very long time. Stone is probably about a hundred years old. I wanted a simple elegant design that showed the relationship of the stones in the story. (The plot is in the link and it's available on several streaming services.) The ring was made for Guy Gayle. (Taking of course his hand shape into consideration.) I took the photos too fast becasue I was sending it to him very shortly. This one is reflective of the ring but not a great photo.
I was really happy with the ring as was Guy. When we are finally over this, I'm looking forward to seeing it on him.
My spinel and rubies pendant design and my Ethiopian pendant design are ready to be cast. There is still a lot of work in the polishing and setting. There will be photos when they are done. Unless the opal stays unphotographble when set. (Check the previous post.)
I've been working forever on a sculpture that I'll be writing about later (possibly much later) And thinking about an Ethiopian opal ring I'll be working on soon. Most of the design goes on in the back of my brain over time before I actually sit down at my wax table.

Ehiopian Opal Photograph Frustration
Jun. 26th, 2020 05:19 pmI just spent an inordinate amount of time trying to photograph an Ethiopian opal I've been carving a design for. And totally failed. After I gave up, it occurred to me that I might find a comparable opal image on the web. I did and with photo shopping got something that really looks like my stone.
Here's the image. Not the actual stone but a representation. Actual stone is about a half an inch high.

The setting is something very new I've been exploring. Very detailed and textured with a three dimensional aspect that's achieved by subtlety curving the design. It involves a lot of very fine carving. It's going to be a pendant with possibly one or more small diamonds. But I won't decide that til I'm much closer to finished.
Also working on the deco spinel with the small rubies in a related style. The new designs are being inspiring.
And on a different note, I have some pandemic shadow photos I think I'll be printing soon.

Druze at Forgcon
Mar. 2nd, 2019 08:02 pmI've been soldering posts for studs and polishing the last of the pendants for Fogcon. And putting a chain and a handmade extender on the Monet waterlily pendant with the kyanite flecked with ruby and 2 small faceted rubies. There will be a photo.
The pendant below is about 2.5 "in sterling silver with a vivid Ethiopian opal and a gorgeous red quartz druze crystal stone. I made it as an astronomical. I have another druze pendant that's grey and clear crystal but unfortunately it didn't photograph well.
I'm waiting for the stones from my two lapidaries that I'll be bringing with me. Excited to see them. If there's time I'll put up a couple of stone photos.
Looking forward to Fogcon!
